DAGALA - The Thousand Lake Trek

Day 01: Arrive Paro International Airport. During your flight you will experience breath-taking view of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Jumolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be received by our representative escorted your hotel.

Day 02: Paro - Sightseeing. Visit the National Museum (Ta-Dzong). This was actually the Watchtower of the Paro Rinpung Dzong. Visit the Rinpung Dzong. This massive fortress is located on a hilltop above the Pachu (Paro river) in the Paro valley. We also visit the Drukgyal Dzong. The name Drukgyal means ‘Victorious Bhutanese’. It was built to commemorate the victory over the Tibetan army and forms one of the many chains of defensive fortresses against the Tibetan invasions. Also on the cards is a visit to the Kichu Monastery. It is considered one of the holiest places in Bhutan as it marks the advent of Buddhism in the country.

Day 03: Paro - Thimphu. This morning follow the winding road beside the Pa Chu (Chu means river or water) down stream to its confluence with the Wangchu, then up valley to Thimphu, the capital. Afternoon lunch at Hotel. After lunch visit the Memorial Chorten, here the faithful circumambulate the shrine dedicated to the Late King saying their prayer beads as they walk. Overnight at the Hotel.

Day 04: Thimphu – Geynekha, 14 km, 4 hours - Drive for about 45 min to reach starting point of the trek. The first day walk, over a mule path is through terraced paddy fields and coniferous forest. The campsite is near a Chorten alongside stream.

Day 05: Geynekha – Gur, 5 km uphill , 4 to 5 hours - Today’s trek is through one of the most enchanting natural scenery amidst alpine flora. Two hours of gradual uphill walk and rest at huge rock platform, offers a picturesque view of the valley below. A further walk of about two hours reaches to campsite at 3,350 where during spring there are abundance of flowers.

Day 06: Gur – Labatamba, 10 km, 6 to 7 hours - Today’s trek is amidst variety of alpine flowers and meadows which freshen the trekkers. The first pass (4,250m) offers the spectacular view of the whole Dagala range, meadow and yak herders camp. Afternoon walk across hills and meadows reaching campsite near Yutsho lake, know for its golden trouts.

Day 07: Halt. Excursions around the camp.

Day 08: Labatamba – Panka, 10 km, 4 to 5 hours - A short upwards walk of half an hour and later descent presents majestic view of Himalayan peaks (alt. 4,450). The prominent peaks such as Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tsering Khang, Khangbum, Masagang, Tsendegang and Gangchecn Ta can be view from here. Apart from yaks and horses, Himalayan Monal Pheasants are a common sight en route.

Day 09: Panka – Talekha, 14 km, 6 to 7 hours - This day entails passing through several interesting passes. The area is also known for different varities of Blue-poppy (June-July) and mountain birds.The trek trail ascents along the western side of a lake to saddle at 4,400m, where there are fascinating mountain views. Afternoon an hour’s gradual climb brings you to the tip of last Dagala range from where the view of Thimphu valley is superb. Further an hour’s walk takes you to Talekha, the last camping place on this trek.

Day 10: Talekha – Simtokha - Thimphu – Paro. Walk downhill on a steep, eroded trail to Simtokha amidst forests of rhododendron and bamboo and apple orchards. Visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kingdom built in 1627 which now houses the School for Buddhist studies. Picked up by your transport near Simtokha Dzong and drive to Thimphu. Evening transfer to Paro for overnight stay.

Day 11: Farewells and transfers to the airport.




Paro Valley
The confluence of two rivers is considered "disturbed" by Bhutanese. The two rivers each have spirits, which don't necessarily get along well when joined (much like corporate managers in a merger situation). Chortens are built to calm the spirits.
 
No mater which trek you select the mountains are never far from sight.
