CLASSIC LAYA TREK

 

Day 01: Arrive Paro by Druk air Flight, which will offer you great views of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Tsrim gang and Jichu drake. The moment you step out of the plane you will see the difference. Bhutan welcomes you with cool, clean fresh air. Peace and quietness is just another bonus. ITT representatives will escort you to Kichu resort. If time prevails visit the National museum and the Rinpung Dzong.

Day 02: Morning visit to Ta Dzong, built in 17th century, as watch tower to defend Paro Dzong and valey. This fortress was later converted into the National Museum in 1968 and is filled with antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons and Bhutan¡¯s renowned postage stamps. Below the Ta Dzong, is fascinating Rinpung Dzong meaning ¡®fortress of the heap of jewels¡¯, which has a long and interesting history.

Aftrnoon see, Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of Bhutan.

Day 03: Drive upto Drugyel Dzong where the road ends and the Trek beings, following the river gently uphill through a narrowing agricultural valley. Lots of homes and Kids. Camp is just beyond an army post. 5 to 6 hours walk. Camp alt. 3800 m.

Day 04: Shana - Soi Thangthangkha 24 kms 8 to 9 hours walk. On day 4 we continue uphill through the river valley. It narrows and closes in and the trial winds up and down along the drainage. Camp is in a meadow with stone shelter BTC has built for trekkers. Camp alt 3800m

Day 05: Soil Thangthangkha - Jangothang 12 kms 4 to 5 hours. Camp alt 4050 m. On day 5 we proceed up the Pa Chu. Pass a small army post where the valley begins to widen again. Now views of high ridges and then snow-capped peaks are all around.

Day 06: Jangothang- Lingshi 18kms7 to 8 hours walk. Climb over Nyele la pass alt. 4700 m. Camp at alt. 4100 m. On day 7 you see wide yak pastures on the way up and down the pass, possibly still some people in their yak tents depending on the time of year you are there. Great views of Lingshi Dzong as you come down into the Lingshi basin if the weather is clear. Tserim Khang and its descending glaciers at the north end of the valley.

Day 07: Lingshi - Chebisa 14 kms 4 to 5 hours walk. Today is the shortest walking day and you can really take it easy. On reaching camp at Chebisa village you can visit the village houses.

Day 08: Chebisa - Shomuthang 16 kms 7 to 8 hours walk. The walk is through wild high pastures with few people and few yaks. Cross Gobula (La means pass) Alt. 14268ft/4350m. Camp here is on a bank of a river, a tributary to the Mo Chu which came out just below Gasa Tsachu.

Day 09: Shomuthang - Robluthang 18 kms 8 to 9-hours walk. Today is a day to start a little early. After crossing Jarela pass alt. 15088ft/4600m you drop to Tsharijatang the valley where herds of Takin are normally seen.

Day 10: Robluthang - Limithang 16 kms 8 to 9-hours walk. After crossing Sinche La pass alt. 5005m, you drop down again and then follow the valley. Lemithang is in the Laya district land here you begin to see the wonderful children in funny hats. Camp at Lemithang is beneath Kang Che Ta, Great Tiger Mountain. If you have time it would be worth wile to spend a rest of the day exploring.

Day 11: Limithang -Laya 13 kms to 6 hours walk. Today is all the way down hill along a winding river valley with quite a closed-in feeling. The trail splits, on going down with the river to the camp site used by the army. The other stays high and brings you into the west side of Laya village. You can camp on a high flat bench above the west end of Laya Village.

Day 12: Laya halt. Explore the Laya village or hike above the camp.

Day 13: Laya - Koina 18 kms 6 to 7 hours walk. The trail winds up and down along the river valley avoiding natural obstacles and affording breathtaking views of the crashing river, feeder streams and water-falls.

Day 14: Koina - Gasa hot spring 19 kms. 8 to 9 hours walk. Enroute cross Balela pass alt. 3740m/12267ft. After pass the trail is all the way down hill till you reach camp. The camp is near the Gasa hotsprings.

Day 15: Rest day at Gasa hot spring.

Day 16: Gasa - Goen Damji 18 kms. 6 to 7 hours walk. After the climb away from Gasa Tsachu the trail winds through rolling hillsides with vistas of fields, villages and Oak and Pine forests. Gasa Dzong will be visible behind you, glued to the valley wall, seeming to float in space.

Day 17: Goen Damji - Tashithang 15 kms 5 to 6 hours walk. The trail descends from the high agricultural benches above the Mo Chu into a lush semi-tropical gorge filled with banana trees, creepers and an occasional monkey. Trek ends where ITT coach will drive you to Kichu Wangdi

Day 18: This morning we'll visit nearby Wangdiphodrang Dzong, and then drive to Thimpu.

Day 19: Guided tour of Thimpu.

Day 20: Farewell and departure.
