BUMTHANG, LHUNTSI, AND YANGTSI TREK

Day 01: Arrive Paro by Druk air Flight, which will offer you great views of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Tsrim gang and Jichu drake. The moment you step out of the plane you will see the difference. Bhutan welcomes you with cool, clean fresh air. Peace and quietness is just another bonus. ITT representatives will escort you to Kichu resort. If time prevails visit the National museum and the Rinpung Dzong.

Day 02: Morning visit to Ta Dzong, built in 17th century, as watch tower to defend Paro Dzong and valey. This fortress was later converted into the National Museum in 1968 and is filled with antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons and Bhutan’s renowned postage stamps. Below the Ta Dzong, is fascinating Rinpung Dzong meaning ‘fortress of the heap of jewels’, which has a long and interesting history.

Aftrnoon see, Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of Bhutan.

Day 03: Paro - Thimphu. This morning follow the winding road beside the Pa Chu (Chu means river or water) down stream to its confluence with the Wangchu, then up valley to Thimphu, the capital. Afternoon lunch at Hotel. After lunch visit the Memorial Chorten, here the faithful circumambulate the shrine dedicated to the Late King saying their prayer beads as they walk. Overnight at the Hotel.

Day 04: Thimphu - Sightseeing: A full day of sightseeing and shopping in Thimphu. Wonder in town, visit the handicrafts emporium. Visit the workshop where all the handicrafts are produced if you like. Afternoon visit the Tashichho Dzong, subsequently a walk up to Sangay-gang, on the way visit Bhutan's national animal the Takin. Wangdiphodarng via Punakha.

Day 05: Drive (6hrs) to Bumthang

Day 06: Trek commences. Bumthang - Ngang Ihakhang 15 kms. 4 to 5 hours walking. The trek route takes you around the Chamkhar Chu a river known for its richness in trout. Lunch stop at Tangbi Lhakhang- then you enter the land Ngang Yul with its centre swan temple Nganglhakhang. This part of the valley was first inhabited by the swans who gave their name Ngang. The Lamanamkha Samdrup having dreamt a vision of how to build a Gompa shot an arrow and at the spot where the arrow landed Nganglhakhang was erected. Cultural programme can be arranged in the evening.

Day 07: Ngang Ihakhang- Ugyencholing 16kms. 5 to 6 hours. Climb gradually to Phephela pass Alt. 3353m. the highest point on the trek route. The trail you follow until the pass takes you through one of the most beautiful frosted area of this region. Allowing for many stops to enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Day 08: Ugyencholing - Phokpey 17 kms. 6 to 7 hours. The beginning of trek is muddy and slippery. At about 3,000m it become a small footpath through muddy fields and dwarf bamboo. At about 3,400m the route crosses a meadow with more dwarf bamboo. Climb through the meadow and traverse through forest to another steep, high meadow. The trail leads to a summer pasture surrounded by forests and the ground is dotted with tiny blue alpine flowers.

Day 09: Phokpey - Ungaar 20 kms. 7 to 8 hours.Continue ascending for half an hour until you reach Rodungla (4,100m). Then it is a steep descent to the valley floor. There are few small meadows en route. After a short wander through dwarf bamboo you meet pine trees near campsite.

Day 10: Ungaar - Tashila 21 kms 7 to 8-hours walk. - This trail like a wave, wins up and down till Drula village and Khaine Lhakhang en route. It is one of the oldest temple in existence today, built in mid 7th century by the King Songtsen of Tibet to subdue demons.

Day 11: Taskila - lhuntsi. Drive to lhuntsi. Proceed to Lhuntse guest house for lunch, followed by leisure time.

Day 12: lhuntsi - Meiji. Drive down to Kuri Zam. Trek starts 16 kms. 4 to 5 hours walk. - Arrive to Kuri Zam and the trek from here is gradually up through the paddy fields and villages. Camp is at 1,850m near Menji village, besides the Darchu Pang Lhakhang situated amidst garden full of flowers of marigold, geraniums, dahlias and nasturtiums.

Day 13: Meiji - Pemi 20 kms. 6 to 7 hours walk. - Continue uphill through the thick, humid forest packed with dense foliage of ferns and creepers and a constant whistle of cicadas. The trail is narrow and steep. Climb steadily for two ours to a ridge top meadow, then plunge back into the forest to reach the camp at Pemi (2,400m) on a narrow ridge top clearing with a view out to a forested gorge and mountains.

Day 14: Pemi - Taupang 21 kms. 7 to 7 hours walk. - Continue upwards till Dong la (3,900m) which present enchanting mountain views. On the opposite side of the pass the trail traverses nine passes, called as nine sisters of Dong la. Finally descend steeply through thick evergreen forests on a trail strewn with rocks, logs to a ridge top meadow. The camp is at Taupang (2,460m), a clearing in the forest with a cowherds wooden shelter.

Day 15: Taupang - Yangtsi 24 kms. 8 to 9 hours walking. Today en route you will encounter huge ferns, red-berried palms and occasional leeches. Two hours of trek brings you to the village of Shukshing, a cluster of bamboo huts on the hillside, surrounded by corn fields, banana trees and grazing cows. The trek ends at Trashi Yangtse Dzong.

Day 16: Yangtse – Trashigang - Morning drive to Trashigang. Vist Trashigang Dzong and local market. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 17: Drive 2 to 3 hors to Samdrup Jongkhar.

Day 18: Exit Bhutan and drive to Gauhati for flight to Delhi (own arrangements).
